An interesting view about some factors of the gap appears in

Klehe, U. (2004). Choosing how to choose: Institutional pressures affecting the adoption of personal selection procedures. International Journal of Selection and Assesment, 12, 327-342.

Is interesting to think that part of the reasons of the gap can be explained if we understand organizational pressures.

Regards

If you visit http://wave.google.com/ you will see Google's latest vision. From the same programmers who brought you Google Maps, now comes their latest invention, "Google Wave".

Think of it as email, blogging, real time translator, and much more. It's entire purpose is to allow collaboration and group thinking. What better way to have a learning organization than one that thinks together? And best of all, it is open source, meaning anyone can take it, use it as their own, suggest changes, and offer code to Google. One might consider open source a form of action learning, in the sense of posting bugs or failures, and then the group fixing it. Virtual action learning? Maybe, but none the less, Google Wave.

Leadership is situational and personal. Any leadership theory that purports to have the "right approach" to leadership will always be somewhat simplistic and suspect.

Here's a situation where I think it is working -- a professional service firm that has just experienced a difficult and painful leadership coup. In this organization, leadership is an obligation to serve. You are asked to serve and you do it as a way to "give back" to your firm. As in most firms all partners are peers whether they are in leadership or not. This particular organization needed also needed some healing. Servant leadership is a fit in this case.

The criticisms of this style are valid and are being leveled at the leader in question in this firm. Is this a sustainable style? We'll see. Is any leadership style sustainable?
